SPAN 308 - Comunidades bilingües

We explore socio-linguistic dynamics of communities around the world where Spanish is in contact with other languages. Designed for heritage learners—students who grew up with Spanish in their community and want to continue developing communication skills in Spanish, but open to all students with the prerequisites. Taught in Spanish.

Esta clase tiene como meta iluminar y analizar varios temas relacionados con las comunidades y situaciones donde el español está en contacto con otras lenguas. También se enfoca en usar sus habilidades lingüísticas en español. Mientras este curso es diseñado para Spanish heritage learners, it is open to all students  who meet the prerequisites: SPAN 203, SPAN 228 or through the SHL Placement Survey . Se enseña en español con translanguaging.

  • Are you interested in exploring sociolinguistic dynamics of communities where Spanish is in contact with another language en América Latina (incluyendo los Estados Unidos), España, África y Asia?
  • Do you want to learn more about the dozens of lenguas originarias (indígenas) que se hablan en México y otras partes de las Américas?
  • Are you curious about how languages formed as a result of the socio-political history in Latinoamérica over the last few centuries?
  • Are you looking for a way to continue to use and grow your Spanish language abilities over the summer, while earning 4 upper-division credits toward the Spanish minor or major?

We will study songs, articles, poetry, essays, newspaper articles, videos, and more. You will learn collaboratively through discussion board videos and posts and will do some creative writing to explore your languages, identity, and the topics of the course.
