Study of a variety of Japanese music since the 1970s. The goal is to help students develop Japanese language skills as well as cultural understanding through music.

Study of a variety of Japanese music since the 1970s. The goal is to help students develop Japanese language skills as well as cultural understanding through music.
This course introduces students to a variety of music from different time periods and genres in Japan such as popular songs, animation songs, Studio Ghibli songs, Vocaloid and Japanese idols. The primary goal of the class is to help students scaffold grammar, vocabulary, kanji characters by incorporating linguistic aspects through music. Students also will be engaged in reading scholarly articles on traditional Japanese style songs and regional music to examine language variation and to broaden their understanding of the geographical and historical background of the time.
This course is designed for any students who have completed JPN 102 or above. All levels of Japanese students (1st to 4th year students) are welcome!
