Explore the Stereotypical portrayal of the Eastern Jews ( Mizrahim ) in Israeli Cinema.

This course explores the portrayal of Eastern Jews (Mizrahim) in Israeli cinema, beginning with the first satirical film, Salah Shabati (1964), and continuing through to the dramatic film Sh’chur (1994). During this period, the representation of Mizrahi Jews evolved significantly—from marginalized, stereotypical characters to central, charismatic figures. This transformation mirrors broader sociocultural shifts within Israeli society, offering insight into changing cultural attitudes and identity dynamics.
