Learn about political, economic, and environmental issues facing humanity today, including hunger, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, conflict, global health crises, human rights violations, political instability, education and immigration. But don’t despair! We’ll look at various solutions for all the issues we cover! We’ll survey major political, economic, and cultural issues facing people and the planet today. We’ll ask who decides which issues get prioritized and what informs people’s sense of compassion and focus.

This course is a survey of major issues facing humanity today including: hunger, economic disparities, global warming, conflict, genocide, biodiversity loss, terrorism, education, refugees, and immigration.

This course offers an interdisciplinary introduction to human wellbeing. We will take a thematic approach to analyzing the factors that impact wellbeing, focusing on health, education, and the environment.

An introduction to the field of “global ethics,” a new and productive way of understanding the ethics and challenges of our global community. The course examines the theories that inform the “global ethics” perspective in order to help us develop a “toolkit” that can be used to better understand and engage with specific real-world concerns and issues – human scale injustice, suffering and threats.

Most people living in rich countries are healthier than at any time in human history. Yet, people across the globe suffer and die of preventable or treatable diseases every year. Why is this the case, and how can we address it?

This course focuses on skills and insights needed by everyone working in cross-cultural settings. Considers values, development, education, politics, and environment as central to cross-cultural understanding.

Study of a variety of Japanese music since the 1970s. The goal is to help students develop Japanese language skills as well as cultural understanding through music.

In this course, we explore the what, who and why of sociolinguistic dynamics in communities around the world where Spanish is in contact with other languages. Open to all students with the prerequisites, but designed for heritage learners—students who grew up with Spanish in their family/community. Taught in Spanish.

This course introduces students to the scientific study of Spanish dialects, sounds, words, and sentences. Skills developed in this class connect to different career paths and help students achieve their Spanish learning goals.

Learn about the science behind the Spanish phonetic system. Students explore dialectal variation across Spanish-speaking communities and its social and cultural value.
